Should I host my kid’s party at home?

kids party at home

The place you choose to have your kid’s birthday party is a big decision to be made right at the beginning of your party planning process. Have your kids party at home? At an all-inclusive venue? Or perhaps at a community/scout/neighbourhood hall. Some people don’t give it a second thought and know exactly what they will do. But maybe you need a bit of guidance…

Cost

  • At home: To start with, it’s waaay cheaper to host your kids party at home. There are NO venue costs! With venue often being that one really big expense, having the party at home immediately reduces that cost by 100%. Lower cost parties are the bomb diggity. Right?
  • At a venue: It will definitely cost more to host your party at a venue, but perhaps the positives outweigh the negatives for you, read on to find out more.

Choice

  • At home: You can do what you like, when you like. You can organise your own food or catering, choose what decorations you like and where they will go. You can be totally flexible with hosting the party at a time that suits you.
  • At a venue: Your choices are often somewhat limited, this is a great thing for people who like to procrastinate or struggle making decisions. Limited choice can be a good thing in some cases, although can mean added expenses if your catering and decoration choices are limited to ‘recommended suppliers’.

The Set up and pack up

  • At home: Set up and pack up time is unlimited. Whatever works for you really. You can spend a whole week setting up the deco’s and food if you wanted to, doing a little bit each evening after work, getting all excited and maintaining your party planning Zen.
  • At a venue: Some venues might do everything for you (but where’s the fun in that?). This means zero set up and pack up required by you. Other venues (e.g. community halls) will give you a limited time to set up and pack up. And don’t forget about packing and unpacking your car with all the food and decorations you plan on using.

The dreaded tidy up

  • At home: There is no escaping the tidy up at home. It’s likely you’ll have a tidy up before and after the party to ensure your place is looking spic and span before your friends arrive. Then, after the party chaos ensues, you’ll need to make your home liveable again. Keeping the party contained to one area/room of the house can help with the set up and tidy up.
  • At a venue: Some venues will take care of all of this for you; awesome! If your venue is a Community Hall, it’s up to you to return the hall back to the state you found it in, so your own tidy up is a must.

The Verdict – kid’s party at home? Or at a venue?

Both options are great. You can’t go wrong. To make your decision, you need to decide what is most important to you. If a full tidy of your home is a nightmare waiting to happen, go with a venue. Maybe you want to cut down costs, have the party at home. Short on time or creativity is just not your thing? Go with an all-inclusive venue. If you like everything just so, have your kids party at home and have all the control you want.
